Diseases of the hypothalamus, such as tumours, arteriovenous malformations, and inflammatory processes, might be expected to result in either diminished synthesis or release of dopamine. Furthermore, certain drugs (e.g. a-methyldopa and reserpine) are capable of depleting the central dopamine stores.
